Dr. Ramón Risco Delgado

RESEARCH DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER

Born in 1966 in Seville, he studied three years of Physical Sciences at the University of Seville and two years at the University of Granada, specializing in Theoretical Physics. He was awarded a scholarship by the Junta de Energía Nuclear (Madrid) to study issues related to Nuclear Fusion by Magnetic Confinement. He completed his doctorate collaborating with Franco Selleri (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Bari, Italy) and Anton Zeilinger (Institute für Experimentalphysik, Innsbruck, Austria), where he worked on the problem of non-locality in Quantum Physics. He founded the FQM-239 research group of the Junta de Andalucía, Fundamentals of Quantum Mechanics.

In 2002, he shifted his scientific focus to biotechnology, specifically to the cryopreservation of biological material. He founded the CryoBioTech research group. Much of his research in cryopreservation was conducted at Harvard University (Boston, USA), collaborating closely with the Center for Engineering in Medicine, Boston, USA. In 2007, he invented a technology capable of cryopreserving certain highly important cell types: human oocytes and stem cells, as well as certain nematodes of significant biotechnological interest. He patented this technology and received recognition from the Merck Foundation, being awarded the prize by the Minister of Health, Dr. Bernat Soria.

He researches the cryopreservation of large human organs, the cryopreservation of the fruit fly (Drosophila), and tumor biopsies, achieving excellent results to date and making significant advancements in organ transplantation and cancer research. In 2013, he founded the “spin-off” SafePreservation, where he has achieved 20 ISI Publications, 3 Patents, 1 Licensed Patent, 30 Congress Contributions, 4 Supervised Theses, 30 Supervised Final Projects, 10 Funded Projects, and 4 Contracts with companies.
